The Future is Now

In preparation for the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg in September 2002, IIED is launching a new series, The Future is Now, to learn from the past and to inform the future. The series will comprise of four issues. We hope it will give the reader an overview of what was accomplished at Rio and the challenges that remain and must be tackled at Johannesburg.

WSSD Round Table in Copenhagen

On 20 and 21 February 2002 the Danish Government hosted a Round Table in preparation for the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development. The purpose of the event was 'to further a common understanding of the roles and contributions of the private sector and the civil society in bringing about sustainable development'. For some, this entailed focusing on proposals for 'partnership' initiatives or 'track 2' approaches (to use the current UN jargon). For others, a broader debate on systemic issues and structural inequality in global institutions and processes took precedence.
