Workshop on Sustainable
Development in Barisal today

A daylong workshop on 'People's consultation on
sustainable development' will be held at the auditorium of Bangladesh
Development Society in Barisal today.
Jointly organised by the Ministry of Environment and
Forest, Barisal Divisional administration, the Forum of Environmental
Journalists of Bangladesh (FEJB) and the civil society, the workshop
will begin at 10.00am.
Whip of the parliament Mujibur Rahman Sarwar will
inaugurate the workshop while Director General of the Department of
Environment Hedayetul Islam Chowdhury will preside.
Environment Secretary Sabihuddin Ahmed, Prof Sirajul
Islam Chowdhury and Prof Ahmed Kamal of Dhaka University, Zahiruddin
Swapan MP, Moazzem Hossain Alal MP, Editor of The Daily Star Mahfuz Anam,
Dr Salehuddin of PKSF, Prof Ainun Nishat and Barisal Divisional
Commissioner Lokman Hakim will attend the workshop as special guests.
The main objective of the workshop is to gather people's
opinion for outlining the course of action for the next 10 years to
achieve sustainable development.
The outcome of the workshops will be incorporated in the
Country Assessment Report and the government will present it in the
upcoming Wold Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD). The summit will
be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from August 26 to September 4.
FEJB Chairman Quamrul Islam Chowdhury, Deputy Secretary
of the Ministry of Environment Dr Mahfuzul Haq and SEMP Coordinator
Babar N Kabir will act as facilitators of the workshop.
DCs and other high officials of the Barisal division,
local educationists, politicians, members of the civil society, local
government representatives, women representatives, NGO activists,
businessmen, environmentalists and farmers will take part in the
consultation.
Earlier, similar workshops were held in Sylhet, Khulna,
Rajshahi and Chittagong divisional headquarters. The national level
consultation will be held at CIRDAP auditorium in the city on March 10.

Success in
poverty alleviation depends on high economic growth

Participants at a
workshop in Rajshahi yesterday said that the success in poverty
alleviation and sustainable development depends on the high economic
growth. They said the country will require eight to ten per cent growth
in economy to achieve these objectives.
The daying
public consultation workshop on sustainable development was jointly
organized by the Rajshahi Divisional administration, Minister of Forest
and Environment, Forum of Environmental Journalists of Bangladesh (FEJB)
and Nagarrik Samaj. Inauguration the workshop, Rajshahi city mayor
Mijanur Rahman Minu stresses the need for regional consensuses
sustainable development in the country.
Presided over
by Quamrul Islam Chowdhury, Chairman of FEJB, the inaugural function was
also attended by Mohammad Shajahan, deputy commissioner of Rajshahi, Dr.
Mahfuzul Haq deputy secretary of the ministry of forest and environment
and Dr. Babar Kabir, Coordinator of SEMP. High district official
leaders, university and college teachers, journalists, businessmen,
representatives of NGOs, farmers and workers of 16 districts of Rajshahi
Division took part in the workshop.
