
Dinajpur Press Club gets connected

Through a simple ceremony one the northern district of Bangladesh
has been connected to the SDNP server through dial-up link.
District Commissioner of Dinajpur inaugurated the ceremony.
Member journalists, members from different Chambers and
eminent personalities attended.
On behalf of National Press
Club, the Joint Secretary, Mr. Abdur Rahman Khan, and on
behalf of SDNP, the Project Director, Mr. MA Hakim and Project
Coordinator, Dr. Hakikur Rahman were present.
Until the day Dinajpur Press Club (DPC) did not have any
Internet connectivity. Utilizing the link all the local
newspapers will be able to send their materials to Dhaka
office. This will reduce their fax cost, for which they
have to dial Dhaka office several times a day. But, from
now on they will send their materials twice a day through
email. After collecting from all members, they will hook
up to SDNP server and send their mails.
This process will also improve
their performance. Dhaka office will obtain processed materials
(composed documents) including color pictures.
Under this programme, SDNP provided one multimedia PC, one
UPS, one modem and other peripherals to the DPC. Praising
this event, the DC of Dinajpur instantly agreed to contribute
an amount of Tk. 10,000.00 needed to procure one scanner
and one printer.

Rajshahi Press Club is under
SDNP Link

Vice Chancellor, Rajshahi University Prof. Faisul Islam
Faruqee inaugurated the cyber cafe of Rajshahi City Press
Club (RCPC). As per recommendation of the National Press
Club, RCPC has been taken under SDNP's network. Eventually,
this connectivity will be directed to SDNP Rajshahi Regional
node.
Like DPC, SDNP supported the cyber cafe by providing one
multimedia PC, one UPS, one modem and other peripherals.
It is expected that RCPC will attain similar efficiency
like other member clubs of NPC, under this collaborational
programme.
Among other, the launching programme was attended by the
Divisional Commissioner of Rajshahi, the Joint Secretary
of NPC, the Project Director and Project Coordinator of
SDNP, journalist members of RCPC and eminent personalities.

Seminar on computer literacy
held
June 3-4, 2002
Speakers at a seminar on Monday said computer literacy is
a must for Journalists to run their daily professional activities
smoothly and acquaint with themselves with the information
super high way, reports BSS.
They were speaking at a seminar on 'Computer Literacy' organized
by Bangladesh Science Writers and Journalists Forum (BSWJF)
at Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.
They said every journalist should have knowledge on computer
technology in this modem era to produce news and disseminate
them quickly.
Dr. Abdus Sobhan, Chairman, Department of Applied Physics
and Electronics, Rajshahi University presented the keynote
paper at the I seminar.
Project Director of Sustainable Development Networking Programme
(SDNP) M A Hakim, Coordinator, SDNP, Dr. Hakikur Rahman,
President Jatiya Press Club, Khondoker Monirul Alam and
General Secretary Swapan Kumar Saha spoke on the occasion.
The seminar was presided over
by president of the forum Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim. Later Dr.
Ibrahim inaugurated a computer orientation programme for
the journalists.
It may be noted that BSWJF is already availing the email
and Internet services of SDNP for the last six months.
3 day cyber cafe opens at National
Press Club
June 5-7, 2002
The Jatiya Press Club in collaboration, with the Sustainable
Development Networking Programme (SDNP) opened a three day
Cyber Cafe for the club members.
Organised on the occasion of the World Environment Day,
the programme was formally inaugurated by Mr. Sabihuddin
Ahmed Secretary MoEF.
Noted IT expert Profesor Jamilur Reza Chowdhury also released
a computer CD containing information on environment of Bangladesh
and the environmental hazards facing the globe.
Speaking as the Chief Guest on the occasion, Prof. Chowdhury
said that Bangladesh needed to utilize the information technology
and enhance the Internet access to increase environment
awareness and attain development.
Presided over by Senior Vice-President of the Club Nurul
Huda, the inaugural function was also addresses by Research
Director of BIDS Dr. Omar Hider Chowdhury and NPC
General Secretary Swapan Kumar Saha.
