Call for environmental development programmes in Barendra region
The Daily ITTEFAQ - APRIL 26, 2003

At a workshop held on Saturday at the Barendra Multi-purpose Development Authority (BMDA) conference room in Rajshahi, the authorities were called upon to organize extensive tree plantation in the almost desert Barendra region, to re-excavate ponds and ditches, make arrangements for drinking water and to take up a planned development programme. It was also said that the long-standing view that development of the Barendra region was not possible, has now been changed. After BMDA was launched in the eighties, the area underwent extensive development. With proper irrigation, crops can be cultivated in this area, not only meeting domestic demands, but being exported as well.

With assistance from UNDPs Sustainable Environment Development Programme (SEMP), the Barendra development authority organized this workshop, conducted by the NGO, Writers and Trainers Forum for Environment Management (WATFEM). Divisional Commissioner Azir Uddin Ahmed was the chief guest at the opening session. The welcome address was delivered by BMDA's Executive Director Dr. Asad Uz Zaman.
