as Best Practices for Rural and Urban Poverty Reduction
Call for environmental development programmes in Barendra region
At a workshop held on
Saturday at the Barendra Multi-purpose Development Authority (BMDA)
conference room in Rajshahi, the authorities were called upon to
organize extensive tree plantation in the almost desert Barendra
region, to re-excavate ponds and ditches, make arrangements for
drinking water and to take up a planned development programme. It was
also said that the long-standing view that development of the Barendra
region was not possible, has now been changed. After BMDA was launched
in the eighties, the area underwent extensive development. With proper
irrigation, crops can be cultivated in this area, not only meeting
domestic demands, but being exported as well.
