Poll fever grips Dhaka Stock Exchange

by Dwijendra Nath Saha. The Independent

Election fever has gripped the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) as the poll date to elect four councillors nears.

Seven members of the DSE are in the race for four councillor posts of the DSE Council, the apex body of the bourse.

The campaigning is getting momentum at a time when transactions at the bourse has increased a bit over the last few days compared with the last couple of months.

The DSE Club has become the focal point for the election campaign. The candidates are trying to win over the voters at the Club particularly during the lunchtime, when most of the members go there for their lunch. This continues till evening even after trading ends at 2:30.

The candidates are busy applying all possible techniques to win over the voters. They are seeking "blessings" visiting the rooms of the members at the DSE building and outside, as well as the residences of voters.

Seven candidates vying for the four posts are: A S Shahidul Huque Bulbul of Bulbul Securities, Abdul Mannan of AR Chowdhury Securities, Abdul Haque of Royal Green Securities, Md Hanif Bhuiya of Rapid Securities, Ahmed Iqbal Hasan of Ahmed Iqbal Hasan and Co, AZM Nazimuddin of Sunrise Agencies and Faisal Kabir Chowdhury.

The election, scheduled for March 20, is expected to be tough as the number of candidates has increased compared with that of the last two years. The number was five and six for four councillor posts for the last two years respectively while the number is seven this year.

With the increase of the transaction at the bourse over the last week, the campaign is also hectic. The turnover in terms of value at the DSE has increased considerably, sources said.

On Wednesday, the transaction touched over Tk 21 crore, Tk 14 crore the following day while it was above Tk 14 crore yesterday at the DSE. The turnover was almost limited within the range of Tk 7 crore over the last couple of months.

As per the DSE statute, four out of the 12 elected members of the DSE Council retire every year. Election takes place every year to elect four new members for the next two years.
