Badminton is one of the four events which started before the formal inauguration. The eight-day Games will be formally inaugurated by the Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia tomorrow at the Bangabandhu National Stadium at 4 pm. Sharmin Akthar Momo and Javed Ahmed of Biman will meet their team-mates Kanika Adhikari and Russel Kabir Sumon in the mixed doubles final at 3 pm. Kanika and Sumon had to fight for all the three sets to defeat Noori and Palash 15-4, 10-15 and 15-5. The medal giving ceremony of the event, however, will not take place today as the Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) has already instructed the concerned federations not to award any medal before the Games was formally opened. Meanwhile, all seeded players advanced to the next round of the men's and women's singles and doubles events. Ten women's singles, 24 men's singles and nine men's doubles matches were also decided on the day. Bangladesh Badminton Federation is organising the competition as part of its 24th National Championship and it is sponsored by Sheltech. In another development it was learnt that the Games' Accreditation Committee is facing a tough time to complete the job as sports persons and organisers were still rushing to BOA office to have their accreditation cards. Some sports organisers including a National Sports Award recipient alleged that they may not get the card in due time as their photos were missing. The member-secretary of the accreditation committee refuted the allegation of the recipient of the national sports award and said that the BOA is honouring 67 recipients of the national sports award by giving them special invitation cards for the opening and closing ceremonies. FINAL DRESS REHEARSALThe final dress-rehearsal of the opening ceremony of the Games was held at the BNS on Saturday evening to scrutinise and sorts of lapses including timing of different events, reports BSS. Almost a packed stadium witnessed the dress-rehearsal. The inaugural ceremony will be marked by a smartly and spectacular opening ceremony, which will feature dropping of seven para-troopers from the helicopter to mark the 7th edition of the games. BOA WEBSITEState Minister for Youth and Sports Fazlur Rahman inaugurated the Bangladesh Olympic Association website on Saturday. The address of the website is www.noc-ban.org. The history and various information could be known through the website. BOA President Lt Gen M Harun-Ar-Rashid and Secretary General Zafar Imam were also present on the occasion. Sports Reporter, The
Daily Star The victory enabled Sylhet to leapfrog Rajshahi, who were firmly in contention to clinch the limited-overs trophy after losing the four-day battle against Dhaka. It was a double delight for Sylhet, who had earlier defeated their title rivals at home in the previous round. Sylhet will now take on no-hoppers Barisal while Rajshahi face Dhaka in the final round, starting on March 13. Sylhet have collected 14 points, two more than second-placed Rajshahi. Nasirul Alam became the toast of Sylhet hitting an unbeaten half-century. The young middle-order batsman scored 67 as Sylhet, chasing a modest Rajshahi total of 183, reached 189 for six with more than three overs to spare. Experienced paceman Hasibul Hossain finished the chase in grand style, hitting Rajshahi and national captain Khaled Mashud for a six. It was unclear why Mashud took the gloves off and decided to bowl the 47th over. Maybe Mashud was disappointed to see his side finish as bridesmaid in both competitions. Nasir played the sheet anchor role after his side was reduced to 53 for four in 17.3 overs. He led a spectacular recovery operation with Alok Kapali, putting on 101 runs for the fifth wicket. Kapali scored an equally impressive 46 off 78 balls. Nasirul struck three boundaries in his match-winning 126-ball knock. The right-hander was later adjudged man-of-the-match. Aminul Islam Jr was the pick of the Rajshahi bowlers with three for 31. Earlier, Mashud scored highest 32 in Rajshahi's unimpressive total before being dismissed by paceman Taposh, who grabbed three wickets for 32 runs. His pace partner Nayeem bowled beautifully to finish with 8.4-5-25-2. Eight athletes hurt in rehearsal Sports Reporter, The Daily Star The Seventh Bangladesh Games, which is already mourning the death of a teenage cyclist this week, escaped another near disaster. On Saturday during a final dress rehearsal, eight athletes were injured while lighting the Games' torch at the all-purpose Bangabandhu National Stadium. Among the injured included former national hockey player Jamal Haider, who burnt his left arm. Another athlete named Bulu, however, only lost some hair that caught fire when standing in front of the cauldron. The others were treated for minor injuries. The bizarre incident created panic among the participants taking part in the three-hour programme for the opening ceremony. Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia will officially declare the Games open tomorrow. Earlier, a 17-year-old Khulna cyclist Snigdha Sultana Helen died in a road accident while training on the Dhaka-Mawa Road on March 5. Snigdha was expected to represent Manikganj District Sports Association in the quadrennial event. Away from the tragedy, however, the show rolled on in three disciplines football, hockey and badminton. FOOTBALL Sylhet blanked Air Force 5-0 in one of the two matches held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. Haider struck twice while Khokon, Rahel and Sentu netted a goal each in the one-sided affair. In the other match, Rajshahi scored a 2-0 victory over Bangladesh Navy. Sohagh, the Chalantika marksman, scored both goals for the winners in the first half. HOCKEY Elsewhere, the top teams in the hockey competition all won their opening matches at the Maulana Bhasani National Stadium. Defending champions Faridpur recorded a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bangladesh Navy with national cap Musa Miah scoring the decider in the 54th minute. Bangladesh Army won the day's first match 3-2 over Rajshahi. The match was locked 2-2 at the breather before Halim sealed Rajshahi's fate with a 60th minute winner. Halim also scored the opening goal for the Armymen in the fourth minute of the play. BADMINTON In badminton, Biman continued to rule the racquet sport at the NSC Wooden-floor Gymnasium. The national airliners ensured that the mixed doubles final would be an all-Biman affair. In the semifinals the Biman pair of Momo and Javed defeated teammates Elina and Shakil 15-11, 15-11. In the other semifinal, Konika and Sumon scored a straight set victory over Nuri and Polash. WEBSITE The Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) yesterday launched a website to provide Games updates for the sports lovers at home and abroad. For those wanting to know what is happening in the eight-day spectacle, they should visit www.noc-ban.org. State Minister for Youth and Sports Fazlur Rahman inaugurated the website. The site also contains information on the BOA as well as its history. Meanwhile, two more events get underway. Basketball starts at the Dhanmondi Gymnasium in the afternoon today. Bangladesh Army meet Habiganj DSA in the opening match at 3 pm. Later Air Force play Narail DSA while Dhaka DSA takes on Munshiganj DSA at 4.30 pm and 6 pm respectively.
