JUTE sector
has multi-dimensional problems. Jute growers in the country do not get
fair price and timely payment of their produce from jute traders and jute
mills. The majority of the growers cannot afford to hold their produce for
long and often sell their stocks in the local markets. They sell jute at
low prices and, in many cases, at prices below the cost of production,
thereby incurring heavy losses. There are reports from different districts
that farmers are selling jute below the cost of production because of
falling demand.
